Calgary EXPO 2011

Hello there! Welcome back.

In my last post I told you that I was going to be attending the Calgary Comic-Con this year. Well, I did go and it was a blast!

There were many costumed heros and villains. Some costumes were purchased and others were hand-made. I was hoping that I would see more cardboard suits, but there were mostly Stormtroopers and Trekkies this time around. There was one costume that did catch my eye due to the materials used. It was a Halo suit made from foam and cardboard. It gave me a few ideas, but the Alphonse armour will still be a great challenge.

Unfortunately, I have not had a chance to start laying it out as these past few months have been very busy. My husband and I are moving at the end of the month, which will give me more space to work on it; almost and entire basement in fact!

I will continue collecting materials and looking for ideas to help with the process for now. Once we get the move out of the way, I should be able to start my blueprints and then drawing out the plans directly onto the cardboard. Until then, there is not much to tell you. But, as promised, I have some Comic-Con photos to share with you! Enjoy, and I hope to see you again soon.

Fun fandom from the Expo

In 2010, I attended my first Comic Convention with a good friend. She and I had a blast and at that moment I knew I would want to make it an annual place to visit!

The merchandise, the costumes and the overall atmosphere were so inviting. I was inspired by the people who dressed up, especially those who built their own costumes. Some were hand sewn, some were cardboard and of course some were purchased. All in all, it did not matter; as long as everyone was having fun!

Earlier this year when I was looking at the Calgary Expo website, I noticed that the Convention accepted people to join in the costume contest! This was news to me, I did not know there was a costume competition, but that was exciting! I decided that I would like to build a costume, but I knew that I would not have time for the 2011 Convention. Instead, I have set my goal to the 2012 Comic Convention.

My husband and I have been long-time fans of Fullmetal Alchemist. So I thought it would be fun to base our costumes from the Fullmetal Alchemist characters. I have chosen to build an Alphonse suit of armour that my husband will wear proudly. For myself, I will either be dressed as Winry Rockbell or Edward Elric. I have not yet decided. I am not too worried about my costume yet anyway, as my first priority is the suit of armour.

Currently I am in the beginning stages of sketching, making blue-prints and gathering the proper materials. I will be adding photos and updating my process frequently. However, before I will start this massive project, I wish to collect ideas from other costume designers at the Comic Con. this year.

Of course, I will be adding photos from this year’s Comic Con. so as to not leave everyone in the dark. So, until then have a wonderful time!
